Skincare Guide for Men

pexels-photo-105934.jpeg

That’s right fellas, you may think skincare is a girl’s game, but everyone has skin and we all should be taking care of it. It’s important to develop a regimen, and try to follow some of the skincare do’s and don’ts that are out there.

We put together this quick guide to help you find some tips you can incorporate into your life. We don’t want to overwhelm you with too too much, don’t worry.

Ready to go?

Buy moisturizer
You probably don’t want to be one of those guys who has moisturizer, but you’ll be glad to have it when you need it. Moisturizer will hydrate dry skin and prevent it from becoming flaky. It’s a good idea to do this after a cleanse, and after showering.

Water > Caffeine and alcohol
Sure, the latter two many will argue taste much better. But in terms of skincare, water will help moisturize your skin and prevent it from drying out. Caffeine and alcohol have the opposite effect and can dehydrate the skin. That doesn’t mean you can never have alcohol or coffee, you just should watch how much you’re having.

Eat better
Vegetables are great for your health and for your skin. Many of the vitamins in veggies and fruits can fight off free radicals.

Get enough sleep
Bet you can’t argue with this one. In terms of your skin (and the rest of your life), a good night’s sleep does wonders. This time will allow cells to repair and replenish, and you’ll feel better in the morning.

Don’t go against the grain
Shaving against the direction of hair growth can cause inflammation of the skin. A smoother shave will result in shaving with the grain.

Just a splash
When you wake up, you might like splashing water on your face to get yourself feeling refreshed. A good splash of water can also removed dead skin cells that remain on your face. If you want to go further, get an exfoliating scrub to use once or twice per week.

Watch the tan
If you like hitting the pool or beach to get some rays, you’ll want to bring some protection. The sun can do lots of damage to your skin and loosen it’s elasticity, speeding up the aging process. Apply SPF 15 sunscreen and reapply every two hours.

When to wear a skinny tie

pexels-photo-63196

You’ve seen them popping up all over the place. The skinny tie is the “it” thing in the fashion world right now. And as with all “it” things, you need to figure out when the best time is to sport it.

There will be faux paus here and there, someone wearing a skinny tie with the wrong type of suit or during the wrong occasion (is there a wrong occasion?)

We’ll be going over the do’s and don’ts of skinny ties to help you always look your best.

The skinny tie basics

What constitutes a skinny tie? Well, a “regular” tie is usually about 3.5 inches wide, anything slimmer will be referred to as a skinny tie.

There are three sizes: 1.5-1.75 inches, 2-2.5 inches, and 2.75 to 3.25 inches.

Once you pick your perfect size (try each on to see how they look) you’ll need to pick the right fabric. Choose from all the regular tie fabrics like cotton, silk, knit cotton, microfiber, and wool.

Next, decide on the right length. According to Skinnyties.com about 90% of you will be getting a tie that’s about 56-58 inches, so don’t overthink the length too much. If you are above 6′ 3″ the site recommends a 58 inch long tie.

Now pull the whole tie together with a tie bar. Here are the recommended sizes based on the width of your tie, courtesy of skinnyties.com:

1.5″ tie = 1.25″ tie bar
1.75″-2″ tie = 1.5″ or 1.75″ tie bar2.25″ – 3″ tie = 1.75″ tie bar

When to wear a skinny tie

Now that you have your tie picked out, when can you wear it? First, you’ll want to make sure your proposed suit or outfit goes with the tie.

You will want slim fitting shirt, jacket, and narrow pants to match the skinny tie aesthetic.

The skinny tie goes great in casual settings, but it’s often not recommended for very formal events. You can get away with it at a formal event, but make sure it is a black silk tie.

A skinny tie goes great with a vest or with a well-fitted button down. Generally the types of men wearing these ties are slim and tall, especially since the skinny tie can make them appear even more tall and slim.

When do you wear your skinny tie? Have you worn one to a very formal event? Let us know in the comments below!

Joey gives casual style advice for the Southwest Florida man

fashion-man-person-beach.jpg

Just this week our very own Joseph Wendt was featured in Florida Weekly! The article is titled Causal wear is the style for Southwest Florida. It’s all about what men should be wearing here in one of the hottest states in the US.

There’s great advice in the article from various people in the fashion industry here in Naples.

Zack Dobbins who blogs about fashion and worked for Ralph Lauren and Valentino suggests that men over 40 “look best in classic American sportswear.”

Here’s what Joey had to say, “There are some really nice looking linen and silk blend shorts that look great with lightweight knit polo shirt,” he says. “But, I mean a polo shirt with no logo, not a golf shirt. Even down here, golf shirts are for the golf course, not dinner dates or events.”

Joey also gives his opinion on flipflops for men, “If it’s an outdoor event where food and drink are being served, no one wants to see bare toes on men.”

Check out the rest of the article here to see what casual style tips you can uncover.
