Skincare Guide for Men

pexels-photo-105934.jpeg

That’s right fellas, you may think skincare is a girl’s game, but everyone has skin and we all should be taking care of it. It’s important to develop a regimen, and try to follow some of the skincare do’s and don’ts that are out there.

We put together this quick guide to help you find some tips you can incorporate into your life. We don’t want to overwhelm you with too too much, don’t worry.

Ready to go?

Buy moisturizer
You probably don’t want to be one of those guys who has moisturizer, but you’ll be glad to have it when you need it. Moisturizer will hydrate dry skin and prevent it from becoming flaky. It’s a good idea to do this after a cleanse, and after showering.

Water > Caffeine and alcohol
Sure, the latter two many will argue taste much better. But in terms of skincare, water will help moisturize your skin and prevent it from drying out. Caffeine and alcohol have the opposite effect and can dehydrate the skin. That doesn’t mean you can never have alcohol or coffee, you just should watch how much you’re having.

Eat better
Vegetables are great for your health and for your skin. Many of the vitamins in veggies and fruits can fight off free radicals.

Get enough sleep
Bet you can’t argue with this one. In terms of your skin (and the rest of your life), a good night’s sleep does wonders. This time will allow cells to repair and replenish, and you’ll feel better in the morning.

Don’t go against the grain
Shaving against the direction of hair growth can cause inflammation of the skin. A smoother shave will result in shaving with the grain.

Just a splash
When you wake up, you might like splashing water on your face to get yourself feeling refreshed. A good splash of water can also removed dead skin cells that remain on your face. If you want to go further, get an exfoliating scrub to use once or twice per week.

Watch the tan
If you like hitting the pool or beach to get some rays, you’ll want to bring some protection. The sun can do lots of damage to your skin and loosen it’s elasticity, speeding up the aging process. Apply SPF 15 sunscreen and reapply every two hours.

Grooming Tips for Men

You’ve got the fashion part down, what else is there to looking good? Sit down while we take you through the world of male grooming. I’m sure you’re familiar with the constant trips to the barber for trims, but what other grooming practices do you participate in regularly? Do you wash your face? Moisturize? What about using specific hair products? If you’re one of those guys who doesn’t really think about this stuff, you may want to start.

According to Neutrogena, we touch our faces 10-12 times an hour. Who knew!? It’s not just touching your face that is the problem, it’s all the other things our hands touch during the day right before they touch our face. You probably know about the amount of germs on common things you touch. By touching your phone, pillowcase, and hair you are transferring oil and bacteria to your skin. The best way to get these things off your skin is by cleansing twice daily. This means getting a good facial cleanser to wash with in the morning and before you go to bed. This will keep your skin healthy and your pore clear.

At least once a week, use an exfoliating scrub. This will remove the layer of dead skin from your face and help get moisturizer in deeper.

As for the rest of your skin, you should be paying attention to your hands and feet. You use them a lot each day and probably don’t pay them much mind. Start using a hand cream if you are noticing calluses. If the calluses are really hard you may need a pumice stone or callus shaver. Just make sure when using these that you don’t touch the soft skin around the hard spots.

As for your feet, you may have calluses there too. Get a pumice stone to heal those too. If your feet a dry and cracked, invest in some lotion (even Vaseline) to keep them hydrated daily. Make sure the lotion doesn’t have alcohol as it can further dry your feet.

As for your hair, if you have short to medium hair you should be using a paste to help hold it in place. For longer hair, use a styling cream to weigh it down. You should be shampooing your hair twice a week, otherwise you can end up with oily hair or a very dry scalp if you do it too often. You likely also don’t need conditioner if you have short hair. It’s mainly beneficial for those with curly, long, or coarse hair.

When it’s time to brush your teeth, you better do it! The last thing you want as you age is to start having bad teeth issues. Using medium or hard bristles can cause gum recession and eat away your teeth’s enamel. So try using a soft bristle. Also brush your tongue! A tongue scraper should be a part of your daily grooming gear. There is a lot of bacteria on your tongue and it’s the primary cause of bad breath. Then lastly, you have to floss more. I know it’s painful but unhealthy gums can lead to serious issues.

Get those nails trimmed. It doesn’t take long, but it’s a good idea to get in the habit of trimming your nails once a week.

Different Beard Styles

Beards are in! I’m declaring that for 2016 the beard is still going to be in style. I don’t see them going away anytime soon. So if you have been wanting to grow one, there’s never been a better time to do it. The problem for some guys may not be “Should I grow a beard?”, it is probably “What beard is right for me?”. It’s a good question because there are plenty of beard styles out there. It depends on your personal style, face shape, and especially your ability to grow one.

Birch Box recommends the following styles based on common face shapes…
– Square Face: Keep hair fuller on the chin, shorter on the sides.
– Round Face: Grow hair longer on the bottom, shorter on the sides.
– Oblong or Rectangular Face: Keep the sides fuller, and the bottom shorter.
– Oval Face: Oval faces are a middle ground between the other shapes, so most styles will work well.

Now here are some beard guides to help you find that perfect look.

No Shave November or Movember?

no shave november

During November, the weather starts cooling down. People pull out their pants, boots, and heavy shirts. And it seems that guys start sporting more facial hair. Well this isn’t just a coincidence. During November, there are two initiatives that take place: No Shave November and Movember.

No Shave November
No Shave November is “a month-long journey during which participants forgo shaving and grooming in order to evoke conversation and raise cancer awareness.” “Grooming and trimming are perfectly acceptable”. But for the most part you are to grow out your facial hair for 30 days. Their mission is “growing cancer awareness and raising funds to support cancer prevention, research, and education.” They donate 80% or more of the funds they receive to the American Cancer Society, Prevent Cancer Foundation, Fight Colorectal Cancer, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Movember
The Movember Foundation is about raising awareness for men’s health issues like prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health, and physical inactivity. During November, you can grow a mustache in support of the cause, as well as donate. The foundation started in Australia back in 2003 and is now in 21 countries.

Whether you want to grow out your beard, mustache, leg hair, or anything else, it’s important to remember the reason behind it. Sure, growing out a beard is fun and definitely in style nowadays. But it’s important to participate to raise awareness and know why you’re participating. Get your friends involved and make it a group event! Help spread awareness of these issues during November, and the rest of the year.

Top Men’s Hairstyles

Have you been keeping up with the latest trends in men’s hairstyles? Man buns are in, as is the undercut, and top knit. These styles have become popular just recently, so don’t be surprised if you start seeing guys sporting these soon. You may even want to try one out yourself. The infographic below from Hairstyleonpoint will help you visualize each of these top styles. So you will know a pompadour from a side part. These styles may not last forever (remember the last time guys had pony tails? Yeah we don’t want to remember either). So get in on these trends while they last.

Grooming Gifts for Guys

Many girls love shopping for personal care items, whether it’s lotion, face cream, makeup, hairstyling products. This isn’t the same for guys. It seems like there really isn’t a lot out there made for me, but that’s totally false! There is a growing trend of guys getting into grooming and keeping up their appearance. You will look fresh, and feel good with these grooming products.

Swiss Army Hanging Travel Kit
If you travel and plan to bring your grooming products along you will need this hanging organizer. It’s big enough for a full-size bottle of your favorite shampoo, and has multiple zipped pockets.

Boscia Super-Cool De-Puffing Eye Balm
This is made for men and women and works wonders on tired-looking eyes. It will cool and sooth puffiness around the eyes as well as dark circles and fine lines.

Tree Ranger Beardsman’s Kit
This is the ultimate beard guy box. It comes with beard oil, mustache wax, mustache comb, pocket beard comb, large beard comb, boar’s hair brush, and bear trimming scissors. It’s made in the US and comes in a fancy wooden box.

Marc Jacobs Brow Tamer
This soft gel formula will shape and hold your eyebrows all day. If you find your eyebrows are a mess after a few hours out, you need this formula.

What to Wear to a Job Interview

Job interviews are kind of awful.  They’re basically extremely awkward dates, minus any of the food, fun, and potential kisses.  …Well, at least we hope your interviewer isn’t trying to kiss you!  At any rate, you need to focus on your resume, what you’re going to say, what strengths and weaknesses you will discuss, how you will answer the dreaded “where do you see yourself in five years?” question…  You don’t want to have to spend time worrying about your clothes, too, but those are essential, as well.  What to do?  Consult this handy chart that the nice people at Rasmussen College made on the subject, of course!  While the ins and outs are a bit more complicated, this list of dos and don’ts is a great place to start!

Man Up!

It’s an unfortunate fact of life that we always have to push this subject…  But look, it’s not like you are going to lose a…  Well, it’s not that bad, is what we’re saying!  Just do It, you are going to love it, we promise!  Ever hear someone say, “because you are a man, you can’t take care of yourself”?  Prove them wrong!  What are we talking about?  One of the dread horrors for men, the one thing they all desperately need but are utterly terrified of getting…  We are talking about pedicures, and why many men out there are still giving this magical procedure a lot of extra thought.

Dead skin, aching feet, pressure from walking, exposure to the elements, not to mention your feet holding your body weight day in, day out.  Wouldn’t it be only fair to give them a little time off from time to time?  And if you still don’t care, just know that scaly feet are a major turn off when you’re under your lady’s sheets (this last, coming straight from the ladies of Joseph’s).

C’mon, get with it, especially now that, on top of everything, you will dare to put on some flip-flops for the beach or pool.  And many designers have launched male sandals collections.

That said, this is what you should do…

For the Beach or Pool ONLY!  Or on your way home from that most needed pedicure: a pair of flip-flops.  Stay classic please, the minute you spend too much time, effort and/or money, you are going to feel like you have to wear it a lot.  Our top pick?  Havaianas in Urban, comes in 4 neutral colors and the nylon top takes away some of that rubbery, too messy look.

Vineyard Vines, Grosgrain Sailor Stripe Flip Flops can be a bit more dressy.  By dressy, we mean “nicer.”  It’s hard to make flip-flops formal!

Gucci Horsebit Top-Strap Sandal

Now, for those cruise vacations or Hamptons nights smoking good cigars, wearing your long linen pants, you may wear the nice sandals.  Of course, only after the pedicure.

Dior Homme Leather Sandal

And these are the best places to get your feet back to normal without compromising your “manliness” in the Tri-State…

The Happiest Place on Earth: The DMV!

…Okay, maybe not.  Not the friendliest, either.  Maybe all these factors (plus the 1.5 megapixel camera) add to the bad experience, and, let’s face it, the hideous picture.

So we decided to come to your rescue.  Ladies have an easier way to do this, as they can enhance the bad light and poor pixel count with makeup, but don’t think because you are a macho man, you have to look extra bad on the infamous shot.  We will give you some pointers that will definitely enhance this “amazing” experience.  And you know what?  If you feel like doing makeup, so what?  After all, aren’t we supposed to all be metrosexual now, anyway?

First, absolutely first: the night before your visit, get a good night’s sleep.  You don’t want to look like a truck ran you over.  And leave the hangover for the weekend.

Pictured: a bad night’s sleep.

Before that good night’s sleep, make sure you had arranged for a haircut.  This is crucial for a decent pic!  Neat and tidy hair only!  Also, remember, this is not the best of times to try a new hairdo, as it usually takes a couple of days to adjust to it.

Not like this.

Wash your face with an oil control wash.  Exfoliating won’t hurt either, you will most definitely look your best without that extra layer of dead skin on!

Moisturize your lips.  Dry lips tend to look chalky, and a touch of lip balm can help them stay visible in a photo.

Bring eye drops, either for allergies or for contacts purposes.  You don’t want red, bloodshot eyes in your photo.

Groom your eyebrows.  No, really!  Comb them, make sure they’re nice and in place.  Even trim them if you have to.  We are sure the last look you are aiming for is Jim’s dad…

Look lean.  Give yourself a more trim appearance by angling your shoulders away from the camera very slightly.  Also, bringing your chin up and craning your neck out a tiny bit will prevent the dreaded double chin.  It may feel odd, but it will look fantastic in the picture.

Don’t distract.  Give some forethought to your outfit.  Pick one that you love!  Remember, when you look good, you feel good, and that feeling of awesomeness can be perceived in the picture.  When picking your outfit, follow these guidelines.  Avoid busy patterns.  Solid colors work best, but avoid white, as it tends to not photograph well.  Often, the background for the photos is a light color, and not only will your clothing blend in if you are fair-skinned, you will also look like you are very pale and sickly.  On the other side of the coin, you should not wear black for your photo, either, again, because it will make lighter skin look pale.

Button front shirts look nice, as do V-necks and plain tees.  And no, although your Captain America T-shirt might be your most favorite piece of clothing, this is not the time to wear it.  It is also not the time to look swanky, but rather put together, respectable, like the good citizen that you are!

A very important tip: be nice to the person helping you at the DMV.  Imagine how great it feels to have someone saying something nice and kind after a day full of complaints and bad attitudes.  We have yet to meet the person that will be rude to you after you pay them a compliment.  Plus, it will make you feel good, too!

And last, but absolutely not least: smile!  Who the heck said you can’t smile?

Added Bonus points: A+++ (don’t worry, it’s not makeup) Per-fékt Skin Perfection Gel.  Why do we love it?  Translucent and colorless (it comes in a tinted version that can match your skin tone, too), it instantly improves skin tone, reduces redness and helps minimize the appearance of enlarged pores and fine lines.

Grooming 101

Okay, gentlemen, you can lie and hide it.  You can pretend to leave everything as you found it.  But when you borrow your girls’ products, you must accept that that scrub is really nice and that lotion was probably made in heaven, which means you will probably end up in dire straights indeed if she knows you were using it ($$$)!  So, for the sake of your relationship and your skin, lets give you a rundown of what you should buy and you should religiously put on.  And for those of you who are single and don’t know what you are missing, prepare to have your world changed.

Guys, let’s face it, it is pretty rough out there.  Pollution, damaging UV rays, dry winter air or extra hours in the sun in summer…  Our face and our body gets it all.  We have to take care.  You may not think it is manly.  Call it whatever you want, but you need a special soap for your face.  A moisturizer, a scrub to get rid of the dead skin and dirt that accumulates and clogs your pores.  You’ll need a trimmer, a manicure, a pedicure…

We’re getting ahead of ourselves now.  Let’s not fall behind here, men’s grooming is as ancient as the Pyramids.  In many cultures throughout history, males have aimed to look impressive as part of a ritual or for religious ceremonies.  Even in nature, some species’ males are the more adorned of the two genders, like the peacock feather train and the beyond masculine lion’s mane.

The removal of hair has been a ritual of many civilizations.  For the Greeks, being smooth meant being civilized.  Ancient Egyptian priests shaved their bodies every day as a sign of purity for the gods.  And in Roman times, the first hair removal of a young male marked the beginning of his manhood and adulthood.  So why are you even thinking about this?  Even during the Elizabethan Era, men’s grooming reached a peak with rosemary water for the hair and sage for teeth whitening.  Let’s get back on the wagon, here!  After all, didn’t we come up with our own thing called being “metrosexual”?  What it’s really called is taking care of yourself, and you should do it all the time!

What you should always have:

Face wash.

Our face looses plenty of moisture every time we shave, so we should have a special soap for it.  One that leaves skin clean but feeling comfortable and ready for a comfortable shave.  Our pick: Clinique Skin Supplies for Men Liquid Face Wash.

Shaving brush.

This is the beginning of a great shave.  It’s also a great exfoliator.  So you kill two birds with one stone.  Our pick: Truefitt & Hill Silvertip Badger Style Medium.

Shaving kit.

Please, please find out your skin type, it will make a huge difference.  We talked in our shaving blog about how you should stay away from designer brands and lots of chemicals.  Choose oils and vitamin-based products.  Our pick: The Art of Shaving Full-Size Kit Unscented.

Razor.

Multi-blade, safety or straight razor, whichever you prefer.  Great quality matters most here.  Our pick: Gillette ProGlide Power Razor.

Face moisturizer.

Do not forget this one, it’s not just for women!  You should be more conscious of the damaging sun rays, even in winter.  Our Pick: Truefitt & Hill Advanced Facial Moisturizer (contains UVA protection and powerful anti-aging ingredients).

Eyes.

This is like a magic wand to erase that happy hour that was extended until the wee hours.  You will love it!  Our pick: Clinique Skin Supplies for Men Anti-Fatigue Cooling Eye Gel.

Smile!

A beautiful smile is the best accessory you will ever have!  Take care of it!  Our pick: Sonicare Diamond Clean Rechargeable Sonic Toothbrush (Consider this the Aston Martin of toothbrushes, with great plaque removal, gum health improvement and whiter teeth).  Bonus points: keep those lips moisturized and protected from inclement weather.  Our pick: Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm, SPF 25.

Body wash.

You need this in your bathroom, gym or travel bag for body and hair thoroughly cleansed and reinvigorated.  Our pick: L’Occitane Cade Reinvigorating Shower Gel (with moisturizing shea butter, sandalwood, immortelle and rosemary; essential oils create a purifying zing).

Scrub.

After the gym, a long day at work and all the contamination of a big city, it’s time to scrub.  You should really do this at least twice a week.  It helps remove dead skin and clean residue out of your pores while soothing your tired muscles.  Our pick: Jack Black Performance Remedy Body Rehab Scrub & Muscle Soak.

Sponge.

That loofah?  You can throw it out!  It’s a breeding ground for bacteria.  Choose instead a mesh sponge which you should always wash once a week.  Or, alternatively, a bath brush (the ones for a dry scrub outside of the tub).

Lotion.

You should have a good body and foot lotion.  Face it, dry, rough skin is not appealing on anyone.  Our pick: L’Occitane Shea Butter Foot Cream & L’Occitane Shea Butter Body Lotion.

Clipper.

We are not cavemen anymore!  Groom your back and chest, please (underarms are optional).  If you still have doubts, ladies approve a million percent.  They love a clean guy.  Our pick: the best all-in-one Norelco Rechargeable Cordless Grooming Kit (it includes an ear, eyebrow and nose trimmer).

Ear, eyebrow, nose hair trimmer.

Yes you heard it right.  We are not suggesting waxing or threading, but de-congesting your eyebrows is a good thing (no unibrows).  Nothing should be coming out of your nose and ears, trim trim trim.

Men’s grooming set.

You can’t live without this, even if you religiously do your manicure and pedicure, which we applaud you for.  You never know when you’ll need a refresher and be out of range of such luxuries, so keep one handy.  Our pick: Zamberg 6-piece Men’s Grooming Set (includes fingernail and toenail clipper, a slanted tweezer and a nail file).

And please, never forget to wear a great cologne.

Now, keep an eye out.  She might just start to “borrow” from you!
