How to keep your shoes clean

Mario Bemer mathis

In honor of Mario Bemer’s recent visit to our showroom, we wanted to discuss the topic of footwear. Specifically, we want to help you keep those new Mario Bemer shoes as clean as the day you got them.

Long gone are the days of a shoe-shine on every street corner, now they seem like a luxury for the wealthy business traveler in the airport. If your shoes get scuffs or dirt marks, you could always take them to the cleaners, but why not just learn to do it yourself and save some time and money?

First off, you need the tools of the trade. These include:

  • A tin of wax
    polish
  • Shoe brush
  • Shine cloth
  • Shoe leather conditioner

Shoe polish will depend on the color of shoe you have. If you have black, get back wax, if you have brown you may want a neutral polish.

The shine cloth doesn’t need to be anything fancy, even just an old t-shirt is fine.

The shoe brush should be made of horsehair. It will be used for removing the extra polish and buffing the shoe to make it nice and shiny.

The leather conditioner can be found almost anywhere, it will be used for cleaning the leather off.

Getting Started

Before you get started, make sure you are in an area that you don’t mind getting dirty. Maybe head outside or place some newspaper around the floor.

Using the cloth, wipe the shoe clean of any dust or dirt, then apply the leather cleaner to a clean cloth and rub it on the shoe leather. Work it into the whole shoe and then set it aside for 10 minutes. After that time, use another cloth to buff it.

Now that the leather is clean, it’s time to polish. Use a small amount of wax at a time. If you use too much, it can be hard to remove. Now rub the polish around in small circles with the cloth. Take your brush and removed the excess, you can put some elbow grease into it, it will not ruin the shoes. Lastly, take a clean cloth and run it along the toe of the shoe in a fast motion (like you’ve seen in the movies) and on the heal.

Here is a video to help you see the process in action.

Men’s Shoe Style Guide

Buying the right men’s shoe for your outfit is a challenge. How do you pick the right color? Or the proper style? What about socks? This infographic by GroomU illustrates dress, casual, athletic shoes and boots. It also covers shoe care, choosing a color, and socks. When it comes to choosing a color, be sure to get brown shoes for neutral color clothes. Wear black shoes with black, deep, or rich color outfits. They recommend not to wear novelty socks, but a bit of color in your outfit is not a bad thing.

The cool (kinda), crisp breeze has replaced the humid summer air, football stadiums are filled with cheering fans, and the leaves outside are beginning to change colors (at least for our friends up north). This infographic by Famous Outfits encourages men to choose texture-rich clothing with an earth toned palette that can be easily layered for warmth.

‘Tis the Season for Weddings: What you need to know to look your best

weddingsThe summertime doesn’t just welcome warm climate, beautiful scenery and relaxing times. It also welcomes the start of wedding season. Summer weddings are gorgeous and heart warming. Unfortunately, your heart isn’t the only thing getting warm. Summer weddings are notoriously hot and can make any guest uncomfortable, especially the men. Men have always been expected to wear penguin suits on formal occasions such as, weddings. However, at Joseph Wendt Custom Clothiers, we have the right tips for every man as they suit up for a lively night of celebrating.

Here are some of the tips and guidelines to follow when attending a summer wedding. Keep in mind though, this isn’t your day so don’t be to over the top to where you over throw the bride and groom. Be comfortable and stylish with your outfit and enjoy it!

THE SUIT

The suit is the most important part of any mans ensemble. Nowadays, men aren’t expected to wear heavy, black tuxedos to any wedding. Our most important rule is to have fun with what you’re wearing. Wear a khaki suit or patterned jacket. As long, as the dress shirt matches and your confidence shows in what you’re wearing, GO FOR IT. Look for a slim, nice fitting suit or jacket when browsing for outfits. With the warm temperatures, stick to linens or cottons to avoid the embarrassing sweat marks at the reception.

THE TIE

This is usually the detail of the outfit that men get most creative with. We agree that getting creative with a tie can brighten up any old suit. It also lets others see what your personality is really like if you get quirky with these details. Always go for a windsor knot, whether you do a half or full windsor depends on your head size. If you have a bigger head, go for a full windsor, and if you have a smaller head go for a half windsor.

THE SHOES

Get a white buck skin shoe. TheY go with everything and they add a point of interest to any look. They may get dirty depending on if its an outdoor occasion or not but you will look better with it anyway.

THE DRESS SHIRT

Its the summertime so that means you should go for more relaxed colors, like a light pink or lavender. Depending on how crazy you are planning on going with the suit jacket and tie maybe go for a light gray. Either way, a nice light lavender or pink can add a pop of color to any outfit, especially if you’re not planning on going over the top.

The Heat is On! How to Dress in Warmer Climates

Image

It is that time of year. The afternoon rain is approaching, the humidity is increasing.. well at least here in Florida it is! I’m not complaining, summer is one of my favorite times of year, but it certainly proposes some challenges for men who like and/or need to wear suits to work everyday. Just thinking of business suits and Florida’s heat can make one sweat, but summer is right around the corner and that’s the reality for Southwest Florida businessmen. Here are some tips on how to stay cool and look cool all at the same time:

The right suit? No sweat

The best choices for business suits in climates like Florida are made of breathable fabrics such as tropical wools and wool/mohair blends that are 120-gauge thread count. These suits wear well, are lightweight and keep their shape. Luxurious Italian cotton and linen suits also are great for staying cool but may require pressing from time to time.

For the evenings, opt for a sport coat made of lightweight wool or a silk-linen blend. These fabrics have a light/lofty feel with a beautiful textured look that is great in either solids or patterns. Another ultra-lightweight option would be a cashmere and silk-blend sport jacket. These jackets wear well and are very comfortable.

Cool leather

A lightweight shoe can make a big difference in keeping you cool and comfortable in tropical climates. Footwear made of Italian calfskin leather is the best choice. The construction of these shoes is lighter in weight and features either a terry cloth or ultra thin lining. In some instances, you can even purchase a shoe with no lining. Also, the structure of these shoes is soft and breathable and is available in a variety of styles, including wingtip, loafer, monk strap and cap toe.
