How to keep your shoes clean

Mario Bemer mathis

In honor of Mario Bemer’s recent visit to our showroom, we wanted to discuss the topic of footwear. Specifically, we want to help you keep those new Mario Bemer shoes as clean as the day you got them.

Long gone are the days of a shoe-shine on every street corner, now they seem like a luxury for the wealthy business traveler in the airport. If your shoes get scuffs or dirt marks, you could always take them to the cleaners, but why not just learn to do it yourself and save some time and money?

First off, you need the tools of the trade. These include:

  • A tin of wax
    polish
  • Shoe brush
  • Shine cloth
  • Shoe leather conditioner

Shoe polish will depend on the color of shoe you have. If you have black, get back wax, if you have brown you may want a neutral polish.

The shine cloth doesn’t need to be anything fancy, even just an old t-shirt is fine.

The shoe brush should be made of horsehair. It will be used for removing the extra polish and buffing the shoe to make it nice and shiny.

The leather conditioner can be found almost anywhere, it will be used for cleaning the leather off.

Getting Started

Before you get started, make sure you are in an area that you don’t mind getting dirty. Maybe head outside or place some newspaper around the floor.

Using the cloth, wipe the shoe clean of any dust or dirt, then apply the leather cleaner to a clean cloth and rub it on the shoe leather. Work it into the whole shoe and then set it aside for 10 minutes. After that time, use another cloth to buff it.

Now that the leather is clean, it’s time to polish. Use a small amount of wax at a time. If you use too much, it can be hard to remove. Now rub the polish around in small circles with the cloth. Take your brush and removed the excess, you can put some elbow grease into it, it will not ruin the shoes. Lastly, take a clean cloth and run it along the toe of the shoe in a fast motion (like you’ve seen in the movies) and on the heal.

Here is a video to help you see the process in action.

Fratelli Rosseti

FRATELLI ROSSETTI

At Joseph Wendt Custom Clothiers, we strive to provide our clients with the highest quality, most fashionable items. We curate our showroom with the best accessories around from ties to cuff links to shoes. Especially shoes! We carry Fratelli Rossetti shoes, because we know they make the perfect pair.

These shoes are true Italian classics. The company was founded as a workshop in the late 1950s and has since grown to the well known brand it is today. But it has kept its handmade origins. It’s amazing to see a pair of shoes still crafted by a person. The level of detail in each shoe is well thought out and thoughtful. Take a look at this video of their handmade process. Once you see the craftsmanship put into just one pair of shoes, you’ll understand why they are so sought after.

The company is still family-run. It was started by Renzo Rossetti in 1953 and is now run by his sons Diego, Dario, and Luca.

If you don’t believe us, come try a pair of Fratelli Rossetti shoes for yourself! We offer a variety of styles at our Fifth Avenue Showroom so you can see the difference in quality of these shoes.

LEATHER PRODUCTION TECHNIQUES

TOLEDO

This is a technique which involves applying the colour straight onto the uppers. The colour is hand buffed onto the untreated leather, originally “blank”, creating a polished finishing effect. For the antique version, the finish is also enhanced with shading which transforms each shoe into a unique one-off.

ALL OVER

This is a special finishing process in which each part of the shoe is the same colour as the uppers. First the master artisans paint the welt with a brush, then they paint the sole edge and buff it with wax to underscore the colour; lastly, they paint the sole so it matches the other elements.
This type of production technique creates effects with different shoe models and tones, ranging from the most classic to the boldest types. It results in shoes that combine a passion for detail with the tongue-in-cheek approach of those that know how to be elegant without taking themselves too seriously.

GENESI

This is a refined, handcrafted technique which conceals the stitching so it is only visible to the keenest eyes. It is the more luxurious version of the Toledo which requires a production process made up of many stages: the eponymous “genesi” leather – a crust leather which is finished on the uppers – is treated with a special dyeing and buffing procedure, creating a shoe which is sophisticated right down to the more hidden details.

SHOE PRODUCTION TECHNIQUES

BLAKE

This is a production technique using a machine which can contemporarily sew the uppers and the insole together to ensure the sole lasts longer.
This type of technique is divided between Blake leather and Blake cowhide. The first, which ensures the shoe is flexible and light, and is therefore suitable for the summer collections, features a leather insole of minimal thickness and a natural cork covering; the second, with more structured results, requires a slightly thicker cowhide insole.

GOODYEAR

With an end to attaining the utmost resistance over the course of time, this procedure has been created to sew the welt together with the insole and uppers and then to the sole. In this way the body of the shoe is longer lasting. A cork filler is inserted into the space created by assembling these parts, making the shoe breathable and preserving the anatomy of the form and at the same time adapting it to the foot. The Goodyear technique, which has become more and more refined thanks to the use of the latest machines and materials, makes it possible to produce shoes that are well structured, comfortable and made to last the test of time.

Dressed-up Sneakers

If you are over 30, you do not want to keep wearing shoes meant for high school kids. Upgrade your wardrobe with mature, age-appropriate sneakers. Sneakers are comfortable, so we understand why you may not want to wear dress shoes all day, every day. Dressed-up sneakers can be worn casually, or even to work if your job allows for a more laid-back dress code. Here are some recommendations for your next sneaker shopping trip.

Avoid Slip on Sneakers

Keep the laces on your sneakers. Slip on loafers are nice, but laceless sneakers are a turn off. They remind us of those prison slip ons, and you don’t want people thinking that about your footwear!

Hydrogen-1 Shoes

These shoes provide the comfort of sneakers with the style of a dress shoe. Hidden behind a leather facade, anyone looking at your feet will think you have on a nice pair of dress shoes.

Nike 1972 QS Deep Red

Apart from the subtle Nike swoosh, nobody will suspect these are sneakers. The dark leather exterior gives these comfortable sneakers a dressed-up look. They are perfect for a night out, or running errands around town.

The Rail Mateo Sneaker

Sticking with dark colors and leather will help disguise sneakers. This black pair combines suede and leather to create a sharp looking sneaker great for casual outings.

Men’s Shoe Style Guide

Buying the right men’s shoe for your outfit is a challenge. How do you pick the right color? Or the proper style? What about socks? This infographic by GroomU illustrates dress, casual, athletic shoes and boots. It also covers shoe care, choosing a color, and socks. When it comes to choosing a color, be sure to get brown shoes for neutral color clothes. Wear black shoes with black, deep, or rich color outfits. They recommend not to wear novelty socks, but a bit of color in your outfit is not a bad thing.

For years, NFL players have come to Joseph Wendt Custom Clothiers as their go-to custom clothier for suits and dress shirts.

I was recently in Atlanta visiting with Matt Ryan and Roddy White to see how they are preparing for the upcoming football season and fit them in some great new suits.

Matt Ryan is the starting QB for the Atlanta falcons. He is a seven year veteran who has thrown for over 153 touchdowns and over 20,000 yards. He has always had an eye for fashion and I’m grateful that he has called upon me to give him some advice on what to wear this upcoming season. Matt and I have been collaborating on his sense of fashion for a couple of seasons now and have really found his style. His style includes everything from well fitted suits for those post-game interviews to everyday casual wear.

Roddy White is a wide receiver for the Atlanta Falcons. He is a 10 year veteran who has over 9,000 receiving yards and over 50 receiving touchdowns. Roddy White decided to join Matt Ryan and I on finding the latest fashion craze for the upcoming football season. His style is very fashion forward which will make him stand out in any post-game interviews. While at the same time he is looking for new and upcoming fashion trends.

There are many professional athletes that I have worked with throughout the years. From former NFL Star and TV analyst Michael Strahan to NLF stars Darrelle Revis and Adrain Peterson.. and these are just to name a few.

What Men Should Pack for a Weekend Getaway

During the summer, its always nice to break away from the office routine and the business hours by going on a weekend trip. At Joseph Wendt Custom Clothiers, we firmly believe everyone needs a break. Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean you can’t take your style with you wherever you may be traveling to. We know packing may seem like a daunting task with the fear of overpacking and under packing; the stress can get to people. Here are a few ways you can relax on a getaway with easy, cool style and the perfect amount of clothes.

PANTS

While on a weekend getaway, depending on where you are going, it is wise to pack a few pairs of pants even in the summertime. Opt for one pair of jeans and one pair of slim khakis. These both are very versatile pieces that go with just about everything. Wear them to the airport, dinner, or a night out on the town!

SHORTS

One of the most vital pairs of clothing you will need for your summer weekend getaway. Shorts are the trademark of summer, by exchanging your long pants for a charming short is one of the best parts of the season. Be sure to pack one khaki short and one patterned short. Wear these around the hotel, out to lunch or soaking in the sun.

SHIRTS

Wearing one is usually optional, but here we have some pointers for you anyway. You will need to pack 3 shirts for your vacation, perfect for the amount of days you will most likely be gone.

  • One is a floral shirt, think beach and relaxed vibes, that you can wear to the beach or on a sunny day.
  • One thin summer sweatshirt, for if it does get a bit chilly, you can wear on a night out.
  • One simple pocket tee, which is great for the airport or traveling. Its easy and will help you cool down.

In addition to these, a simple navy blazer is always excellent to have on hand just in case. This packing list will be sure to give you a memorable and fun weekend getaway over the summer.

Don’t Clash or Crash: Cycling to Work in Style

cycling

Sometimes getting out of bed in the morning and groggily making your way to work is enough energy for your morning routine. However, a new craze has come along! Biking to work is now becoming increasingly more popular. People have always biked to work, whether its your environmentally conscious friends or your freakishly fit acquaintances, and others just like to avoid the rush of traffic in the morning hours. For whatever reason you bike to work, there has always been one complaint, “I always have to change my clothes after.” This age old problem has kept people from slipping on their spandex and packing their work clothes for the day.

With the popularity of biking to work at an all time high, a new industry has been created. Suits designed to bike to work and take meetings in. Companies like Parker Dusseau have developed a suit you can bike to work in using Marino Wool-Spandex Blend, a stretchy material. The crtoch has a diamond design instead of a four way seam, providing flexibility and comfort.

Although these suits are pricey, $495 for the jacket and $295 for the pants, it still provides a gateway to new designs and new ways to get into this niche market. So, next time you think about grabbing your bike rather than your keys, don’t hesitate!

‘Tis the Season for Weddings: What you need to know to look your best

weddingsThe summertime doesn’t just welcome warm climate, beautiful scenery and relaxing times. It also welcomes the start of wedding season. Summer weddings are gorgeous and heart warming. Unfortunately, your heart isn’t the only thing getting warm. Summer weddings are notoriously hot and can make any guest uncomfortable, especially the men. Men have always been expected to wear penguin suits on formal occasions such as, weddings. However, at Joseph Wendt Custom Clothiers, we have the right tips for every man as they suit up for a lively night of celebrating.

Here are some of the tips and guidelines to follow when attending a summer wedding. Keep in mind though, this isn’t your day so don’t be to over the top to where you over throw the bride and groom. Be comfortable and stylish with your outfit and enjoy it!

THE SUIT

The suit is the most important part of any mans ensemble. Nowadays, men aren’t expected to wear heavy, black tuxedos to any wedding. Our most important rule is to have fun with what you’re wearing. Wear a khaki suit or patterned jacket. As long, as the dress shirt matches and your confidence shows in what you’re wearing, GO FOR IT. Look for a slim, nice fitting suit or jacket when browsing for outfits. With the warm temperatures, stick to linens or cottons to avoid the embarrassing sweat marks at the reception.

THE TIE

This is usually the detail of the outfit that men get most creative with. We agree that getting creative with a tie can brighten up any old suit. It also lets others see what your personality is really like if you get quirky with these details. Always go for a windsor knot, whether you do a half or full windsor depends on your head size. If you have a bigger head, go for a full windsor, and if you have a smaller head go for a half windsor.

THE SHOES

Get a white buck skin shoe. TheY go with everything and they add a point of interest to any look. They may get dirty depending on if its an outdoor occasion or not but you will look better with it anyway.

THE DRESS SHIRT

Its the summertime so that means you should go for more relaxed colors, like a light pink or lavender. Depending on how crazy you are planning on going with the suit jacket and tie maybe go for a light gray. Either way, a nice light lavender or pink can add a pop of color to any outfit, especially if you’re not planning on going over the top.
